IDA LARSEN
Danish contemporary artist
Works
Wallhangers
The wallhangers are works made out of various materials. Textile principles, such as lines, knots, rhythms, and directions, are a major theme of these works. Lines and points gather and spread in different rhythms and innumerable repetitions. The work have a simple and concrete expression. in order to underline the structure and surface of the materials.
Kolymata
Kolymata is a word created by Ida Larsen, it is an invented word inspired by the Greek word “kollima”, which means “sticking” and also refers to someone getting stuck on something. For these works, only self-adhesive materials, such as adhesive tape, stickers and post-its, are used. The materials are mostly used directly on walls or floors. The idea is to create an organic surface from these synthetic and not very necessary materials These works only last as long as the shows or as long physical conditions allow them to.
Garden Works
In these works, the garden is used as a metaphor for the body – the body as the tool for reproduction, the natural origin and purpose of the body. Seeds and soil are often used in these works to create living and growing objects. Life and death are also major themes of these works. The seeds sprout, they grow, they exists, and then they die.
Inside Out Outside In
The idea of this projects are to work with whatever holds or hides the content of a thing or a creature (its appearance/external/outside), such as the peel, the shell, the skin, or the wrapping, and to combine this with materials usually used for wrapping. These materials are, for example, plastic bags, adhesive tape, bands, paper, and so on. Some materials are transparent and offer a peek to the inside, some are completely opaque, so that only through imagination or destruction, they will expose their content.
Photo Works
Photography helps Ida Larsen develop ideas spontaneously, and it gives her the opportunity to use materials which are not directly palpable. Photography is used as the medium which comes closest to retaining a moment . The photo works are usually not or hardly edited. By editing photo/video the moment gets lost and the result becomes different from what was actually captured.
Video Works
Video is used with the same principles as photography, but it additionally comprises the perspective of movement. Video can illustrate how some materials react when touched and moved. Ida Larsen often experiments with herself . in front of the camera, using her face and body as material for video performances.
Surface: A City Art Project
Recently Ida Larsen has found liberty by working in the streets of Athens. She is trying to spread her work to a wider public, by working outside the common and often closed circles of the artworld. In this project she has developed an interesting combination between, already existing graffiti tacks, old posters, wall structures, and her often minimalistic expression
